Choosing Your Twitch Channel Point Rewards
Choosing your Twitch channel point rewards to customize your channel has been around since the start of 2020 for all Twitch Affiliates and Partners.
When the feature first rolled out, we used the default rewards but jazzed it up with custom reward icons and a custom name. At the very least, our icons and points would be different from other users using the defaults right from the start. However, we knew that having unique channel rewards was an opportunity to connect with our audience beyond the usual gameplay that we stream. It was quite a bit of time before we added our first set of custom rewards.
Ask Your Viewers
One of our first custom rewards was suggested by a viewer and this is what really kicked off the process of choosing our Twitch channel point rewards. We had a conversation with our viewers to brainstorm, as a community, rewards that they would enjoy redeeming. We a had a few consistent viewers at this point and involving them was something that we should have done from the start. Having the community’s input was important but we knew that to really make the channel ‘our own’ we had to ask ourselves what are we willing to do while streaming.
What Are You Willing To Do?
We wanted our Twitch channel point rewards to be fun, silly, creative, and/or entertaining. We decided that adding some song and dance to the rewards would be fun for us since they’re already things that we enjoyed. Also, it was a way for us to share these interests with our community, while we’re busy gaming. The ideas that came up for rewards tended to be more complex but we wanted to add some simpler ones.
Some of the basic Twitch channel point rewards that we chose to have, encourage things that we should be doing anyway. Often, while streaming we forget to hydrate, eat, and move our bodies. Setting these up as rewards gives our viewers a way to remind us to take care of ourselves. We’re actually surprised at how often these rewards get redeemed. Some of our more creative viewers have redeemed all the basics at once and challenged us to do it all the same time!
How Your Rewards Can Change Over Time
With the way we’ve set up our Twitch channel point rewards, we had one stream where it really got out of hand. We were struggling to make it through in a big tournament but we also wanted to honour the rewards being redeemed. This was the first time that we were really being spammed with rewards and I decided to indulge the stream instead of focusing on my tournament. We didn’t make it. After this particular stream, we realized that we really needed a shield from the rewards themselves.
The Twitch channel point reward that we’ve added as a shield is called ‘Save Arvton’. This is the reward that anyone can claim when there’s a tough spot in the game where more focus is needed. It gives us a break from any of the shenanigans that may occur from entertaining rewards during the stream. We realized that viewers might be seen as party poopers for redeeming this reward but there are viewers that really want to focus on gameplay. We felt like this is a good compromise and noticed that this was a reward that created some viewer-to-viewer interaction .
The ‘Save Arvton’ reward was our first reward that was more of a viewer-to-viewer interaction. Everything that we’ve added to this point has been a viewer-to-streamer interaction and this new angle is something we need to explore. If you have any reward ideas that encourage positive viewer-to-viewer interaction, we’d love to hear from you in the comments section!
Reward Pricing
The last important bit about Twitch channel point rewards is deciding the cost. We believe that many of the rewards should be cheap so that new viewers could engage with the community right away. This is why the easier rewards to complete while gaming make the bulk of our channel rewards. We have rewards that require more effort to pull off. These are more expensive to redeem so our loyal viewers who have been earning lots of points can enjoy something extra special.
